Ruins and Silence[Disaster Topic]

Well, here she was, finally. Primaris' heavy feet crunched stone and wood as he moved through the ruins of Nazogakure. Seiko stood atop his shoulders as though she was a lookout in a crow's nest. Her hands were held behind her back and her legs and shoulders were squared. She was long used to the shifting and leaning of Primaris' movement, she didn't need to worry about falling but she still stuck to him with chakra flow nonetheless. As they moved she scanned back and forth, seeing various village personnel moving around, shifting rubble, carting bodies and weeping over the destruction.

For a moment she wondered if she could truly understand the destruction wreaked without the emotion of sadness but perhaps it would only have hindered her. She needed to be at full strength to help her fellow shinobi and kunoichi, if her mental faculties had been impaired by sadness she would be unable to do such things. Or at least that was how she justified it to herself.

"Here will do." She murmured to herself as she dropped down into a fairly flat patch of land, Primaris shifting rubble away from it to clear a large open area. Seiko removed several objects from her digitize array, staking several large poles down into the ground using her strength before using Primaris to hook a large canopy over the poles, a large pole in the middle keeping the roof up and letting any potential rain slough off the sides rather than pool. With that done she took out a brush and cleaned away the dust and dirt under the canopy, humming tunelessly to herself as she did so, just to ease the silence that lingered over the village.

After about twenty minutes she deemed it clean enough and called over to a pair of genin, telling them that this was now a triage station and to bring any loose medical ninja or injuried parties to her so that she could do something about them, either fixing them up herself or keeping them stable for someone with more experience than her. She also sent Primaris away with them to help move rubble to ease the process. The last part of this was that she pulled on a pair of gloves and disinfected herself with a large bottle of industrial disinfectant she had brought with her, no sense letting germs settle after all...

This was Kotone's home, her people, so to see it all messed up like it was, hit way too hard. But this gave her a position. After what had happened before Isobu, Kotone had a lot of answer for, and she hadn't even been tried for potential involvement. As soon as she was about to, everything literally blew up. Now coming out of the other side she was back to working as best as she knew; as a Priestess. As the fighting died down, she had retreated to the Temple to mobilize her fellow Priesthood. Back across Nazogakure, Kotone Zakiyoshi wasn't a Chuunin, at least not soley, she was a member of her clan, and a face of Kikuri.

She was walking with another girl, chatting away like this was an average day and they were just running a delivery. It wasn't what Kotone wanted, but she could see this other girl needed it to stay calm, to feel on top of it all. They were heading to find somewhere to set up but... well they were beaten to it. The girl, Della, froze and looked with some worry, but for Kotone, Primaris was not hard to recognise. And she froze for a completely different reason. The last time she'd seen Seiko ... well... She had reason to be nervous to see her again. But... maybe an objective observer would help. And from the looks of things she was helping set up. Perfect. "Come on Della. That's a friend." And she began to walk up with boxes.

"Seiko! Lovely to see you and... Primary? No, something like it. I'm sorry I've forgotten your golem's name." She was as bright and cheery as ever, despite everything, but the exhaustion was clear on her eyes that she likely hadn't slept well lately. Together the two Zakiyoshi set down their boxes. "Looks like you beat us to it. Me and the Priests of Kikuri are out delivery supplies from our personal stores."

"Our Serpents are very helpful for supplying water."

"Our partners are capable of purifying water. So we of the Priesthood are making deliveries while I wait for any official instructions." Della bid them farewell, suggesting to let them do any catching up and for Kotone to help the set up here, and headed off. "So has something in particular brought you all the way out to Nazogakure?"

The sounds of footsteps caused Seiko to stop from adjusting one of the poles to make it stop shaking whenever Primaris stepped near and she turned to face the two women walking towards her. For a short moment, her eyes were steel, ice cold but her threat assessment didn't last very long and she reached up, nudging up her glasses with a knuckle and her eyes returned to their normal faintly empty look.

A small smile crossed her face and she nodded to Kotone. "Primaris and you needn't worry about him," She said directing the second part to the girl she hadn't met before, "he is entirely under my control and not dangerous unless I command him to be. It's nice to see both of you however, friendly faces are in short supply." She nodded and brought Primaris over to pick up the boxes and move them out of the way. "I am afraid I don't have any seats to offer but I will say that I'm glad for the water, it'll be vital to help the injured."

She seemed to pause for a few moments, mulling over her words before turning to Della. "Primaris lacks fine dexterity, he is built for brute strength, could you assist him with opening the crates and shifting the water to an easily accessible place, I wish to speak with Kotone." She said simply although with some authority behind it and waited until the girl walked off before stepping up to Kotone and whispering to her, her voice sharper now. "You have my thanks for now but not my trust. I came to Nazogakure to help the wounded and assist with reconstruction efforts. Kohaigakure survived with surprisingly little damage considering what beast attacked it. However in you I have found another purpose to be here. I want to know what happened and I don't think I need to specify what I mean." Her eyes were hard, though her body language was completely relaxed, completely in control.

Right to the point. Honestly it was what she expected, and she did think it was just what she needed. "Trust me, that's far better than I've been getting around here." She tilted her head to the side in a half hearted shrug. "But I don't have a lot to say that isn't already on the record." As she spoke she worked at unpacking the boxes she had brought with her to better check over the stock she had brought. "... Elias wasn't happy with things. He's from this long line, I'm assuming you're aware of the Bachiatari group his ancestor comes from? Well Jin was the same. And my own grandmother was connected to them, if not as directly. I think when it comes down to it, that was why the three of us were put together." She glanced around at that point, just making sure none of her clan were around. "... Please keep it to yourself, but I understood their feelings. My clan have been... pushy. They wanted me to be like Himiko. And I felt trapped. And they were my br- ... they made me feel free. I saw freedom just being around them." Realising she couldn't really focus whilst doing heavy lifting she instead moved to more simple tasks.

"The village know this though. But I was close to joining them. Until the day, I was... I was waiting for a 'signal'. I thought we would just slip away with the help of Tiernos and that group. Nobody... Nobody gets hurt." Then she couldn't even do anything but cry. This was only the second time she had told anybody what happened. And of course she breaks down telling it to the girl who closed herself off. "People got hurt. People died. Everything got... it got so crazy... and then... then... I saw him again. I saw the boy I called my brother. A-And I learned the truth." She wiped her arm across her face, sniffling. "The riot was the signal. And his parents murder ... did you know his mother's name? It was Himiko. And that... he killed his own parents. That is... that's like... the highest sin to my people. If I condoned what he did, what that group did, I would be a black stain to my people. And uncomfortable and annoyed as I was by their awful pushy expectations, I'm still proud to be a Zakiyoshi. I came so, so close to having my name taken from me."

She glanced back up towards Seiko with a bit of a smile and rather than wipe her eyes dry she instead just transformed to her Hydrification state for just a second to just pull the tears back in to her. "Sorry to go crying on you. It's all still really sore and... obviously there's been hardly enough time to process. I've told the Republic what I know, which sadly doesn't give a lot of information to where Elias is now. And my beliefs haven't changed. I don't think the Republic is doing enough." The conviction returned to her voice as she was resuming the work to get herself busy again. "I don't want to follow in my grandmother's steps and go so far as to even help create a village, or bring together a fractured clan in truces, become a leader of the village. I just need to find a new path. Show people that I'm not some kind of double agent still with Elias."

Seiko for the most part just listened, keeping a watch on Kotone and doing her best to judge the emotional reactions. She couldn't understand sadness but she was pretty good at picking out lies or falsehoods but... None of them seemed to be present. She pursed her lips and continued working, moving some of the contents of the boxes aside, setting up some additional things from her digitize array such as a table and putting a cloth over it so she didn't have to place everything on the floor.

Once Kotone started crying, Seiko reached into her pocket and handed over a perfectly folded handkerchief but it would seem it wasn't required. She still offered it if Kotone wanted it but if not she'd simply place it back in her pocket and go back to work. She couldn't understand sadness but she knew it affected people harshly. Once the other girl was done, Seiko spent a few long moments in silence working away as she processed everything that was said before finally speaking, her voice slightly warmer now.

"From experience I can tell you that every clan will push the members it believes in. They want to see where your limits lie and they want you to become the best that you can. Have you ever considered that they pushed you because of what they saw in you? One of the greatest of the Clan? One with the most potential? You don't push and encourage people that you don't believe in, it becomes wasted energy. If they are wasting energy on you, if they are putting trust and faith in you, then they believe you are worth it." She looked over the table for a few moments, fixing a few instruments so they were perfectly in line. "There's always a temptation to leave, a belief that there is freedom on the other side. How free is it though to be hunted constantly? How much blood do you have to spill to finally be free?"

Seiko turned to her, a frown etched onto her face. "I've considered leaving. I know the village, I know the paths, I could leave fairly safely. What good would it do though? If you leave the Clan just picks someone else and does the same thing. Is your freedom worth inflicting your so-called torture on another, a dozen others? Jinnouchi and Elias are selfish and their hands are stained with the blood of innocents. Leaving was never going to change the Republic, the injustices you believe exist... And they might do, your sentiments aren't the only time I've heard them, wouldn't just disappear. They'd be put onto someone else and they might not be as strong as you." Her voice started to become a bit heated, anger flashing in her steel gaze before she sighed and shook her head, the anger leaving her as suddenly as it appeared.

She took her glasses off and cleaned them with her sleeve. "People think me a robot, a machine closed off from emotion. I am not. My emotions are raw but controlled. I stay with the village because I believe that I can make a difference from within. Why don't you try the same? You don't like how your clan treats you and people like you? Then change it, prove yourself stronger than your so called brothers and make it so that no one else needs to feel like you do. The Republic is doing wrong or not doing enough? Then fill that void, be the person that helps, that makes sure others don't feel like you do. Cowards run from their problems, Kotone, heroes face them head on." She put her glasses back on and changed her gloves. "Which of them are you, Priestess?"

Out of everything, of everyone, Kotone had in the back of her mind felt that Seiko was the best for this. And she certainly wasn't proven wrong. "You're... not wrong. And... that is how I think now." She took out one of the bottles of water, taking a moment as she recalled still having a vacant vial on her thigh holster. "And... you're not wrong. They see my potential. I learned the Hua Po songs younger than my mother and uncle. I mean... even younger if you factor in the whole aging differently thing." She giggled and tapped at her chest. "But it's not... It's not the pushing to be better. I would be grateful for that. It's the pushing beyond what I can... what I want." She corrected herself midway through, some fire finally coming to her formerly cold emotions. "They assign the coldest, strictest teacher, because he's the best, yes. But also because I... I was wild. You know what the compound guards called the three of us? The Troublemakers. Because... that's what we were. In hindsight that takes a whole other meaning."

She trailed off as Della made her return, arms full with a single box, and having handed Primaris, if it was still with her, plenty of others with simple food stuffs. Sadly the Zakiyoshi couldn't prepare food as quick and easily as supply fresh water, but having at one point being the 'secondary heart', and in some ways was still that way in terms of the 'love' from the Temple, there was still plenty of room in the stores they could now distribute while they rebuilt. "The shinobi of Nazo don't all trust me yet. The clan is uncertain. But I can promise you this." She stood, straight and narrow like a genin in front of one of the Feudal Lords. "I wanted to leave because I felt I had no choice, that nothing could be done. Not without breaking my vision for the future. But... I don't have to be that person either. My clan wants me to be a Kage. But that's not my decision. I felt trapped by what people around me expected of me. But... in this trying time... I'd honestly rather be nowhere else. If I had left. If I had defected. I wouldn't be able to live with myself. And... if I'm honest again, I think I'd be locked up in a cell right now after racing back to help Nazo after the attack." Della looked up looking completely lost as to the conversation. "And Kikuri continues to guide me. So no, Seiko, I'm not a coward or a hero. I'm Kotone Zakiyoshi. And I carry the heart of Kikuri within me. The love for my people. Just as ever Zakiyoshi does." In a peculiar bit of sync, both Zakiyoshi girls touched at their hearts and closed their eyes.

"Then you'll have my support, Kotone. You wouldn't talk like this if you were working with Elias still, too many things just don't connect." Seiko said, glancing over to Della and giving her a nod, Primaris lumbering in behind her, crouching to get under the canopy so that he could put the boxes of foodstuffs down and heading outside again. "The events unfolding here would be a perfect opportunity to leave and you haven't done so, I'm certain that others have. You instead stand here, ready to care, ready to protect a village that all but hates you. I cannot understand the sadness you feel but I can stand at your side and ensure that changes come."

There was a shout as a group of people came around the corner, carrying several people on stretchers or on their backs. "So let us start proving the love you feel to the people of this village, shall we?" She said with a smirk before waving the carriers over and getting them to put down the wounded under the canopy onto the cleared ground. Seiko used blankets and articles of clothing to help prop up heads, working with clean, mechanical efficiency. There were three people in total now in the triage station. "Kotone please check one of the others, tell me of any obvious wounds you see if you don't have the medical training to look for anything further. I've got to check this one." Seiko said, beginning her diagnostics on the groaning, wounded man lying in front of her, a Jonin by his headband he looked like his legs had been crushed under rubble and he had blacked out from the pain. She could probably ease the pain and begin setting up splints but she needed to know if the others were worse, he wasn't bleeding out after all and the most wounded person came first.

"Yeah, there's been a few." Kotone answered with a sigh, not wanting to think about those who had left in the carnage. She shook it off, already feeling her mind wandering back all that way. "That's what I'm here for. I was at ground zero over here, but even then I... didn't get the best response when I tried to warn my clan through my familiar Thadie. Soon as it hit, I sent her back to the other sea serpents to spread word to the rest of my clan. The serpents were fine, but apparently having heard the message from me, there was... a little uncertainty. But that's passed now,"

She glanced up as people were being brought in. And watching Seiko work like this, it brought a smile. She was so preoccupied during the events with the defectors she hadn't been able to pay attention to how her medical expertise worked. "I'm not a med, but I'll do my best," She rushed over to check one of the others, a woman with a nasty gash behind her ear, drifting in and out of conciousness by the looks of it. "Nasty cut here, and... sorry Ma'am, I know it hurts, can you feel your feet?" She received a very week nod. "I think that means not a break or not a back injury?" She didn't look over to Seiko, but still called out what she saw. "Nasty, nasty bruise to her left leg though. Keeps blacking out." She clicked for Della's attention and pointed at a rag she was handed, quickly soaking it in water and pressing against her wound to try and clean some of it up. "Ah! Della. Call your familiar to help,"

"She's a Salt Water Serpent though Miss Kotone,"

"Oh? Ok, erm... hold this a moment," Without a word the two Zakiyoshi switched places and Kotone stepped back. Channeling chakra, she swiped a hand over her shoulder and held out her hand with a slight flourish. And with practised ease, Thadie popped in to place along her arm. "Ok, Thadie, we're gonna be treating wounds here. I need you to keep this place clean." She dipped the rag back in to the water and drained it out, already tinted an ashy-red. "I don't think Seiko's is bleeding and this is a wound that I'm only cleaning, so just clean this up for me every time I dip it. And Seiko! If you need any water purified, Thadie is at your service."

Flickers of knowledge danced through her mind as she worked on easing the man in front of her. Connections and ideas sparked and locked together like completed circuits and she reached out, running her hand over his legs, a low glow coming from it as she eased his pain enough so that she could straighten out his legs and begin to apply splints to make sure they healed correctly. She made sure to keep track of what was happening around her though and she tilted her head towards Kotone.

"Check the size of her pupils for me, see if they are the same size. If there's a differences in sizes it might be a concussion or sign of other cranial trauma." Her voice was bathed in the coldness of logic and focus and she sat up, taking her gloves off, cleaning her hands and then putting on another pair. She performed some hand-seals and spawned a second version of herself who immediately put on gloves of her own and crouched down next to the first man.

"I was there when Shukaku struck Kohai. I was in the library studying. Howling winds, sand choked the streets, I saw... Many buildings sink into a quagmire." She said, almost as though she was talking to herself, reordering her thoughts. She had seen a lot more than that, blood on the streets, traitors and murderers attacking people attempting to fight for the village. However talking of such things would make the people around her panic which wasn't conducive to good health. "However, I also saw heroes. People fighting against a beast that knows no mercy to save their loved ones, their friends and their village. In my own way, I fought with them and I respect each and every one of them."

Deep down she knew that there was a knife hidden in her words but it wouldn't hurt to drive that point across. She checked the person beneath her, a young girl who lay there seemingly asleep. Seiko rapidly checked her breathing and her eyes, her breathing rattled and hissed and with a bit more of a check she could tell it was cracked ribs and perhaps a punctured lung, things she couldn't deal with on her own. She eased the girl's pain more and called the carriers over, helping them set up a more stable carrier before lifting the girl onto it. "Take her to the full Med Nin, I saw them as I entered the village, I've attached a tag to her thumb to tell them what is wrong with her." She gave them directions and then waved them off before cleaning her hands again.

"Unity is our greatest strength and though I know little of relationships, I care about my village and I care about the Republic. Nothing is perfect but surely it's better than sharing drinks with malcontents and murderers." She looked out across the village, pursing her lips as she finished her thought.

Kotone did exactly as she was told, checking out the woman's eyes, taking a second to watch any pupil dilation. "... Maybe a tiny bit bigger one side? Hard to say, not big enough a decision a novice can tell." Watching Seiko work was always so interesting. Either in this such case, performing medical tasks, or in the heat of a battle, Seiko had this air about her. A sharp efficiency. In it's own right, it was a great way to be. Yet, it was also the opposite of what she could really do. They were opposites in some ways. And there was nothing wrong with that.

"Yeah. Me too over here. Isobu was... I've heard so many stories. My clan even has ties to him. Did you know that actually?" She was so much more comfortable, more so than when they first met earlier. Airing her stresses was clearly good. "I'm a story teller. Or, I'd like to be. My clan wants me to be a leader, but... I just want to tell of the grand epics. Of heroes. And I'll have one hell of a story when we pull ourselves back out." She let out a sigh as the woman was taken away.

She turned to Thadie and did some assisting with the water purifying there, even if she couldn't do the process herself. "... I actually admire that about you Seiko. And if I might be honest, I don't care about the Republic. At least... not as an entity. I still share that belief with Elias. But after everything, I still believe in the Republic's people. There's no black and white. Or even greys. It's all... feelings. Waves of light. I still believe that Elias, Jinnouchi, and everybody else who left before and during the attacks, are a form of light in their own ways. But... They're these harsh red lights now. You on the other hand... a nice cool blue. Am what I'm saying making sense?" she laughed nervously. "Either way. Unity, that's what I believe in. I could turn my back on structures, but I can't turn my back on the people."

"Two, go and check on her please, I'll get the other patient set up and start making some food for everyone." Seiko muttered and her clone nodded, swapping out gloves and cleaning her hands once more before moving next to the woman that Kotone had been tending to. She done a quick check over and then opened her eyes one by one, sparking up lightning in her free hand to check the dilation response. She hummed quietly for a second before putting her hand over the woman's leg and using some of her chakra to soothe the pain.

"Seems to be dehydrated and is blacking out in response to pain, no real cranial damage, pupil response is normal as are sizes. I can't start an IV here but she also isn't wounded enough to require treatment with the medical corps. Della, sit next to her and keep her company, the pain should have receded so when she wakes up try and get her to drink some water, even just a little and do your best to keep her awake. Once that's done I can get a better look at how she's doing." The Clone said before stepping away and kneeling down on the ground, watching carefully.

Seiko for her part pulled together a few boxes and propped the wounded jonin up on them, he gave her a smile and a nod and she stood up, taking her gloves off. "You rest there for now, if the pain starts to come back tell me. I'll get some of the supplies out and see about getting you water and perhaps something to eat if you do well enough." She walked around him and stretched her arms out for a moment before turning to Kotone.

"Two and Della should be enough to look after her for now. Do you have any way of getting information to a lot of people? Perhaps through your sea serpent? People need to know where we're set up and that we have supplies. Primaris should be enough... Security but I can bring out Secun... Borealis if I must." A strange look of worry crossed her face for a moment as she corrected the golem's name but she turned and got to work.

"In regards to what you were saying... I in fact did know about the connection, I studied the Zakiyoshi and your own records, I done the same for almost everyone that participated in the exams. Knowledge is power. There's actually quite a few clans that can trace abilities or ideas back to the Tailed Beasts. The Kaironokuma for example were inspired to take up their metal sand by Shukaku's own ability to command sand." She shrugged as she worked, checking what was in store and pulling out some fruit and dried meats, likely for alms but it would be more useful now. "I cannot change what you think, I can only attempt to alter it and let you see what I see. To me, the Republic is a force for good, Villages used to war and slaughter one another but we're past that now, or so I hope. People seem to want to go back to our warring ways and I will do all in my power to stop that, it helps no one." She clenched her hand for a few moments before sighing.

"Anger is one of my few emotions left, others spark to it. Perhaps I should feel sad but I no longer know how that feels, even my memories of it before are clouded and broken. This is for the best, of course, the extra processing speed is useful. I can see what you mean by the lights however, it's not how I see the world but I can understand it. We're all just parts of a great machine, Kotone and it's up to each individual gear and cog and screw to decide if they want what's best for the machine... Or if they'd rather care for themselves and bring the whole thing down. A simple way of looking at it but I find comfort in simplicity."

"Funnily, that's actually how I pictured you... picturing it. Like a machine." Kotone cast her gaze up, letting Thadie take a moment to catch her breath before surely a thorough task needed to be done next. "I of course don't believe we should go back to warring. That would be absurd."

"I am ready Miss Kotone, Miss Seiko." Thadie stretched out, taking a sip of that very water she had been purifying.

"Thanks Thadie. We just need word spreading, like Seiko said. Just like during the attack, have your brothers and sisters spread to my own the location." Just as Thadie was reading to summon herself back to the realm Kotone halted her. "Wait! That's not a bad idea. See about positioning those like you at the medical tents, and that the priesthood are aware of the tents locations too. Perks of the job right," Thadie only nodded and vanished in a puff of smoke and chakra. "Harsh as it might be, changing my mind on how I feel towards the Republic as a structure... that won't happen every night. I just need the trust that I believe in the people within. Those I work with side by side every day. And that I hope they can trust me that I wouldn't do anything to actively bring harm to them. Not... Not again. Never again." She was slowly being sucked back down to that. "Amends. For a childish mistake. Something I need to work on when I've not got a more important job in keeping everybody safe. Right?" Just as she finished, Della let out a little squeal of surprise as her own sea serpent burst on to the scene next to her, startling them both. But seeing she was with Kotone, just bowed it's head and returned to it's realm as it did not need to pass on any messages to it's partner. "I guess Thadie passed on the message then,"

“Hey, no! Don’t take that, it’s not yours, HEY! HEY, STOP!” The voice of one of their patients. If they’d look over at the direction where the noise was coming from; they’d notice a little girl holding a silver pendant and some food. “Shut your mouth! My mommy needs this or she’ll never wake up! ”

The little girls eyes began to well up with tears before she’d notice the attention being drawn to her. So like the clever little thief she has become, she’d take off as fast as she could. She had intentionally placed herself a great distance from the working shinobi in the area so she’d be able to escape. The patient was incapable of giving chase or preventing the child from taking the pendant. “Please, that pendant belonged to my wife. She didn’t make it. That pendant is all my son will have, please.”

"I was not attempting to change your mind in a single night nor did I believe such a thing would be possible. However I am beginning to turn the wheels of change which is what is important. No village was built in a day but all of them started with a single brick." Seiko told Kotone with a soft smile as she continued her work. Hearing the commotion behind her however she snapped around to see what was happening and dismissed her clone, drawing its chakra back into herself alongside its knowledge.

"Look after the situation, I've noted down the problems with each of them, please look after them." She told the attending medics, handing over her notes and pointing them towards her next tasks here before turning to Kotone. "I'll give chase, follow me if you wish Kotone, there's something going on here." Seiko declared before rushing out of the tent, Primaris bounding over next to her and scooping her up onto his back. He'd offer a hand to Kotone if she wanted to join Seiko atop the Golem but either way, the Golem would push straight off of the ground, using its massive strength to leap towards the girl, chasing her down. Thieves would be dealt with... Promptly.

Kotone looked across the area and back towards the commotion that was going on. Only down side is she was in the middle of helping in cleaning some bandages at that moment, which took her a little longer than Seiko's simple recalling. She hurried what she was doing, leaving the rest of the group to their work, along with Thadie to remain behind for now to keep up the purifying. She stood up ready to chase after, only for the thumping of Primaris to draw focus next. Seeing it as the fastest way to travel, she took the offer and hopped atop the golem along side Seiko. "Then away we go." She turned towards the victim of the theft with a smile and wave, before the hulking creation barreled off with the two on top.
