Nazogakure Dual Training

Subject: Nazogakure Dual Training 18th March 2020, 8:27 am

Roark sighed, though it was more of an inward sigh considering he was currently in his weapon form and strapped to Banjo's back, but regardless he sighed. At the request of the Hokkai elders, the monkey had walked him to the training grounds. According to the elders, genin were apparently required to work and train in squads, possibly with members from all over the Republic. Most of these genin were bright eyed, bushy tailed hopefuls who couldn't wait to forge along on the path of the shinobi, or whatever crap they told themselves at night. Roark hated meeting people and more than that, he hated meeting children. Apparently, the elders had made arrangements to team Roark up with another genin and the two were to meet in the training grounds today to get used to one another and feel each other out. They wouldn't want a pairing without synergy, and Roark had been specifically instructed to actually give this person a chance and not waste anyone's time. He was annoyed, but on his best behavior. Still, until he actually got to know whoever this was, he felt better having Banjo be the first face he/she sees. Not to mention, it always made for a good laugh when someone assumed Banjo was Roark and they'd be working or doing business with a shotgun toting monkey.

Having gotten word that she was finally assigned a team, she was ecstatic. With her parents both virtually uninterested in her life as a shinobi she didn’t really have someone that she could relate to, talk to or train with but thankfully today was the day. Although she didn’t know who this person was or what they were like she was determined to make a good first impression to build that trust and bond that was needed for their team to be successful, that and she didn’t want her only chance of getting away from her parents constant naggings about how being a shinobi was a waste of time. With that said she would quickly get dressed and headed over to the training grounds to meet her new teammate.

Arriving at the training grounds, Vicktoria made her way over to the meeting spot and immediately saw a big monkey standing around with a shotgun on its back. Odd, she thought as she moved closer wondering why a monkey would be standing around by itself on the training ground, unless? Nah that was impossible there was no way that the monkey was her new teammate but it was standing where she was told to go. “Um… excuse me?” She said trying to get the monkey’s attention. Could it even talk? It did have a weapon so maybe it was intelligent enough. “Are you… Roark?”

Roark could see through his connection to Banjo that his latest teammate had arrived. A small girl with white hair who hadn't appeared to have even hit puberty yet, not that Roark was some perv, it was just a general observation about her age. She carried an interesting looking bow, far more interesting than the little training bows they handed out at the academy, which Roark had scoffed at way back when. If she knew how to use it, she might just be worth his time. Alright Banj, let's not be mean to the newcomer, last thing I need is to deal with the elders after they find out we sent our new "teammate" home crying, but we might as well have some fun. Banjo smiled, revealing rows of sharp, bestial teeth. To Vicktoria it would appear he was smiling at her, obviously unaware of Roark's mental connection or even presence with the beast.

As Vicktoria approached, Banjo scratched his head before rushing towards her on all fours. He stopped short, walked around her on his fists, sniffing the air before stopping in front of her and coming to a seat. A large, hairy finger shot directly up his nose, rooted around for longer than seemed necessary and finally came out with an impressive rock of snot and mucus. Banjo sniffed the booger before deciding he wasn't interested and flicking it off into the distance. He made some grunting noises before nodding and putting out a massive hand to shake, as he had seen the more evolved simians do so many times before. Inside, a chorus of laughter exploded as Roark laughed himself to tears.

This was obviously some sick joke. Vicktoria thought as she watched the beast monkey around. She knew that Faunus was a thing but she also knew that they were as intelligent as the other races and based on what she had seen here it was obvious that he was just an ordinary monkey which made her think that maybe she was mistaken about this animal being her new teammate. “Um, no thank you.” She said to his handshake because why would she shake the hand he just picked his nose with? Ew. Letting out a sigh she would turn on her heels and began walking in the opposite direction. Maybe the person was just running a bit late and there just so happened to be a monkey around or maybe this was just a cruel trick her parents played on her so that she’d get discouraged and drop her dreams of being a shinobi. Making her way to the nearest bench she’d take a seat hoping that someone would actually show up.

Aw shite, looks like we upset her. This generation is a bunch of sissies by the look of it. Roark thought to Banjo with a sigh. Alright big fella, let me out so I can talk to her and get this show on the road. The Blango nodded in understanding, taking Roark from his holster on Banjo's back and tossing the gun into the air. There was no need to do this, Roark didn't have to be airborne to transform, it was just something Banjo had gotten accustomed to and Roark didn't mind enough to change the beast's habits. The shotgun writhed and transformed, though anyone without at least D-rank+ reaction would be unable to see this disturbing writhing, instead seeing a tall man dressed as a cowboy standing where the gun once was in midair. Roark reached into his inner jacket pocket, pulling out a pack of cigarettes before calling out to Vicktoria.

Oi, missy! Yeah, you, the sad, dejected looking one that's acting like she just saw her puppy get murdered by some wolves. I'm Roark, sorry for the joke, Banjo and I don't interact with people much, so we like to get our laughs in where we can. He pulled out a lighter as he spoke, sparking a small flame and breathing life into the cigarette. He approached Vicktoria, taking a long drag from the cigarette and expelling a cloud of soft, white smoke. He looked down at the girl and then the cigarette in his hand, Not sure you're old enough for these, but I'm trying to work on my...er...common...something. Courtesy, common courtesy. He said, holding out the pack.

Together, a pair of Jonin were working down a list. With the chuunin exams going on a great many of Jonin sensei were preoccupied, and getting ready to lose their students to new ranks. Which was not favourable for these particular two; Souji Kurusu, and Dahlia Ibwa. A pair in of themselves, and doing the rounds checking up on the new prospective students. This one was the last on the list, and then they could finally attend the big ceremonies, cheer on their son. "Report states they're in this area," The youthful woman said with the clipboard in hand.

"Yeah I think..." Souji began, drawing on his cigarette. He might not have noticed where exactly they were if not for the flying gun that appeared in the air and suddenly shifted in to a man. "We're right on time," He turned, arm around his wife's shoulders and guided the woman around to the courtyard. "I'd say don't mind us, just checkin' on the Genin," He called out as they entered the field.

"We're Jonin making the rounds of some new teams. Wanted to check in," The woman who looked like a teenager scribbled something on her sheet.

"Yeah so... maybe don't offer the young cigarettes. Ok buddy?" Souji was suddenly up in front of Roark in the blink of an eye, and took one of the cigarettes straight from him. "Any way, we're two of the Jonin for fluid teams right now until you get assigned someone specialised. If you need anything before then, just ask in the offices for Souji and Dahlia Kurusu."

"That's Ibwa darling. Darlia Ibwa,"

"Tch, married eighteen years and still won't take my name huh?" The two spoke as if they were all alone for the moment. "... Any way. Yeah. Souji and Dahlia. We kinda come as a pair. Ask for one you'll get us both unless you specifically just want one." And with introductions done, they stepped back. "We're just sit back a while, part of the job, you two do your thing and we'll be gone before you know it."

Her grey hues scanned the entire training grounds in hopes of coming across the person she was actually supposed to meet today. Her eyes would land on the monkey once more and watched as he took off his shotgun and tossed it into the air. Strange she thought but continued to watch what the beast was doing when she noticed that the gun was writhing around which made her quite uncomfortable in truth but when it turned into someone that’s when it all made sense, the man was messing with her which was pretty mean if you asked her.

“Um… I’m twelve sir I’m not allowed to smoke besides my mother always told me not to speak to strange old men so I’m sorry I have to cut our conversation short.” She said as politely as possible before getting off this bench and making her way towards the opposite direction of the man while trying to keep him in her peripheral just in case he was trying to kidnap her. She didn’t get far though as two Jonin suddenly appeared out of nowhere much to her delight. “Thank you for checking in, I haven’t seen the other member of my team though. Are they running late?”

Roark took a step back as a strange man suddenly appeared in front of him, Watch it! He exclaimed, involuntarily. From behind him, he could hear Banjo snort with anger and tense up. Roark shot his partner a look to calm him down before he did anything stupid. He doubted he and Banjo could go toe to toe with a Jonin, never mind two Jonin at that. He looked down at his packet of cigarettes and noticed one missing and the male Jonin (Souji was it) sparking up. Right, sorry, like I said, still new to the whole...conversation thing. Roark said, pocketing his cigarettes so he didn't suddenly lose more.
Okay then sweetheart, so I guess we're teamm- Roark paused, finding the girl had up and disappeared from the bench during his interaction with Souji.

He looked around for her, finding her speaking to the female of the pair. Um, excuse me miss, I hate to disappoint, but I AM your teammate. Er, at least I'm supposed to be I think. I was told to meet here, same as you. Roark scratched at the stubble on his neck.
Look, I know I'm a bit rougher around the edges than most of your other...classmates from the academy, but I'm a genin, same as you. Banjo grunted behind him and Roark sighed, Right, right, Banjo over there is a genin too. He always wants me to make sure people know that.

“You’re a Genin?” Vicktoria said a bit surprised at this sudden revelation. She found that a bit hard to believe considering he looked old enough to be her father. She’d look to the two Jonin that were present for confirmation about this and based on their reaction it does seem that everything he said was factual. Pushing her shock aside, she would clear her throat and turned to face the man before bowing slightly. “Forgive my rudeness Roark-san. I’m Vicktoria, Vicktoria Mikhailov. I hope we can get along and work well together!” She said with a smile hoping he wasn’t offended by her previous actions. Though he was an asshole for tricking her like that earlier based on what she’s seen so far he seemed like a good person. “I would like to apologize to you as well Banjo” She stated turning and bowing slightly to his pet. Was he a pet? Who knew but she did feel like she owned the animal an apology. “Now that we’re here what do we do?”

Aye, got a bit of a late start on the whole...path of the Shinobi lifestyle. Roark said, taking a final drag from his cigarette before flicking the remnants away. It smoldered and smoked in the dirt of the training ground before fizzling out. Well, first of all little lady, if we're going to get along you need to drop the san thing. I'm not a fan. Also, no need to apologize, I sent the first shot with the whole, Roark twirled his hand in thought, monkey gun trick. As she apologized to Banjo, the monkey was mid scratch, realizing the attention was on him suddenly. He looked at Vicktoria and cocked his head to the side, a bit confused.

He offered a wide, toothy smile to her, to which Roark said, He accepts your apology, and he's really sorry for what's about to happen next. It's been awhile since Banj had a chance to train with anyone other than me. As if on cue, the Blango charged forward on all fours, leaping over Roark to tackle Vicktoria. I believe we're supposed to be training Miss. Roark said with a laugh as the fur ball bound over him.

She didn’t know the details as to why he started out this late but she was happy that she was on a team with someone who was older than her as he could provide her with the wisdom and guidance she lacked in her life. “Training? Is in sparring?” She said a bit confused at first about what was happening before she finally caught on. To say she was weak was an understatement. With no one really guiding her or no one to train with she was at the same level she was back at the academy, probably worse off seeing as she spent the majority of her time learning civilian things from her parents. A letting out a soft sigh, she’d grab her bow before jumping backward at D rank speeds, though she was weak there was one thing that she was particularly good at and that was hiding with that said once she was hidden she’d make her way to the nearest tree, perched on top and waited for the perfect chance to strike.

Now here was something interesting that would happen, it seemed Vicktoria misjudged Banjo's speed ever so slightly and as she jumped back to avoid the monkey, who was moving at D+ speeds versus her D-rank speeds, Banjo would swipe at her feet. As a result, she would most likely fall to the ground, however, this wasn't the interesting part. What was interesting was that when she hit the ground, she simply vanished into thin air. Banjo, poised to strike again, regarded the space where she had been with confusion. He swatted at the ground, trying to find her, but by then Vicktoria had already made her way towards the tree she was hiding in. Banjo sniffed the area, searching desperately for his new playmate, but to no avail. Frustrated, he began hollering into the air of the training area.

Meanwhile, Roark regarded the entire interaction with mild confusion of his own. Hmm interesting, seems we have a little field mouse. He made a mental note to look into better tracking skills later as he scanned the grounds, looking for any sign of her. There were several trees and small boulders scattered throughout, though if she truly was invisible she wouldn't exactly need cover. Then again, he had heard other Hokkai mention people who were capable of teleportation. He doubted a genin would be capable of such a feat, but then again, who knew with this latest generation. Roark whistled as Banjo became more and more frustrated, Come out now miss, I didn't mean to scare you with Banjo. He just wanted to wrestle, he knows not to hurt you or anything. We can't exactly train if you're playing hide and seek.

Vicktoria would scoff at her carelessness at allowing Banjo to hit her it wouldn’t matter in the grand scheme of things since she was successful in escaping and putting distance between the three of them. This spar was definitely not in her favor as it was two against one but with Roark and Banjo lacking any tracking abilities she’d have the upper hand for the time being. Taking a deep breath, she would raise her bow aiming for Roark at first but after mulling over her decision for a quick second she’d decide it was best to aim for Banjo. She’d let fly an arrow, which traveled at bullet release speeds, aiming towards his chest. Now since this was a spar and she knew how dangerous such an attack was the power behind it was so small that instead of piercing it would feel as if was stung by a bee.

As Roark scanned the area, Banjo suddenly let out a yelp of pain, stumbling backwards a moment. The Blango grabbed at his chest, searching for the source of his pain and finding a small arrow, its tip barely buried within his fur. No, don't- Roark began as Banjo yanked the arrow out of his chest and snapped it in half. Roark sighed as he approached the monkey to make sure he hadn't caused more damage by taking the arrow out. Other than a tiny bead of crimson blood, Banjo looked fine. You'll live. Roark said matter of factly before turning towards the direction the arrow had come from. Sometimes it paid off to have two sets of eyes on the same team, and this was one of those moments. Although Roark wasn't positive where the shot had come from exactly, based on where Banjo was standing and the direction he was hit from, Roark had a general sense.

Alright then, if that's how you want to play this game, fine by me. Roark said as his muscles suddenly contracted and a small gust of wind seemed to emanate from his body. Suddenly, Roark would disappear, moving at B-rank speeds he first would punch through one of the boulders, shattering it into nothing more than pebbles. To anyone without proper tracking or reaction tiers, it would appear the boulder had exploded on its own. Then he moved onto the tree Vicktoria was hiding in, swinging a powerful kick through the trunk. While Roark had no idea Vicktoria was in or near this tree, it was simply the next nearest object in his path. His foot splintered the trunk, causing the top to fall backwards, Come out, come out wherever you are.

Vicktoria stood there perched on the limb of the tree as she watched the events unfold. With her arrow hitting she would be able to confirm that they had no means of seeing where and when the attacks came from which gave her the upper hand in this fight. Since she wanted to avoid injuring the two of them she decided that it would be best for her to just keep on hitting them with non lethal but mildly painful moves until they were frustrated and conceded the fight to her. " Hm?” Vicktoria would lose her train of thought the moment she noticed Roark entering some sort of powered up state, a bit much, isn’t it? She thought as she readied her bow once more when she noticed he was going on the move. Thankfully for her he was moving at a speed she was easily able to track and thus the moment he had destroyed the boulder and turned his attention to the tree she was in she knew it was time to exit stage left. Jumping out the tree before he came into contact with it she would fire two-phase release arrows into the air, both arrows would then, in turn, separate into six smaller arrows (twelve in total) before raining down on Roark and Banjo. While they were busy trying to defend themselves from the onslaught she would make her way to the bench from earlier where she’d use as her new cover.

Hmm. Roark pondered as arrows suddenly appeared in the sky above he and Banjo. For a moment he considered tracking their trajectory and attacking the spot they had been launched from, but realized he had already over done it just by opening the first gate and he needed to reel it in a bit. He pivoted and exploded forward at B-rank speeds, dodging his own arrows and grabbing Banjo just as the arrows above him embedded themselves in the ground. Breathing hard, Roark deactivated the first gate, cringing in mild pain as the recoil arced through his body. He grit his teeth and stood upright, fishing out another cigarette. Banjo regarded him calmly, but with mild concern. Alright, I just wanted to check to make sure they had given me someone competent and not some little runt. You clearly know what you're doing, Miss. Roark said as he approached the bench to take a rest, having no idea Vicktoria was in the area.

You can come out now that we've had our little pissin contest. Figure we should probably get to know each other a bit if we're fixing to be on a team and such. Roark called out, taking a long drag on his cigarette and expelling the smoke through his nose as he searched the grounds for Vicktoria.

Vicktoria watched as he quite impressively dodged all the arrows she had shot at him. She didn’t anything else up her sleeve so when he decided to call their sparring time quits she was elated. She was, however, quite happy with how she faired against someone of her level and this encounter gave her a small bit of hope that she’d be able to actually make it as a shinobi even though she disagreed with him since she didn’t truly know what she was doing. Hoping over the bench, she’d sit down and waited for him to arrive and when he did she would reappear with a smile. “That was a good fight, Roark. You’re pretty strong! I could never have taken you head-on.” She stated offering her hand for a handshake.

Kami above! Roark would shout, jumping back a bit and nearly falling off the bench as a little ghost girl appeared next to him. Nearly gave an old man a heart attack. He said, shaking his head, but smiled and shook her hand when it was offered. Yeah well, not much sense in worrying about taking me head on. Couldn't a found you if I wanted anyhow. He pointed at Banjo, who was currently scratching his arm pit and staring off into space, You reminded me I need to teach that one some tracking skills, so thank you for that. Roark scratched at some stubble on his chin, thinking for a moment, So what's your story then miss Vicktoria? Why are you bothering to become a shinobi and such? Just the family business like most of the runts running around here?

“Hm, I probably need to learn some counters to those who can track. My technique would be useless if someone could easily find me.” She said before pulling out a small pocketbook and scribbling down that thought amongst the others for her to review later when she got home. “My reason? I guess it’s because I wanted to provide my parents wrong. They’re both civilians who wanted me to be a scientist like themselves. But I want to be more like my uncle, he wasn’t a famous shinobi or anything like that but his life seemed more adventurous and more importantly, he seemed happy. Sure my parents make a lot of money but they both argue a lot and just seem generally unhappy with laugh. Which made me realize that I’d rather be a mediocre shinobi that is happy with life than a successful scientist who’s unhappy with life. At least that’s my take on it. How about you Roark?”

Roark raised an eyebrow as she produced a notepad from a purse suddenly, but said nothing. He listened patiently and silently as she gave a brief overview of her life and what drove her to this path. Parents who didn't understand her, he felt like he could relate to that in some small way. The clan elders could never relate to him or understand him, Banjo was the closest thing he had to family. He took another drag on his cigarette as Vicktoria wrapped up, staring off into the distance before snapping back to reality to answer. He shrugged, Can't say my story is as interesting. Being in the village, especially the pack, you're not allowed to leave much. Banj and I got tired of that after awhile and decided the best way to see the world would be to become shinobi. Get up there high enough and they let you come and go as you please, take on missions and meet people from all walks of life. Seemed like a decent gig. He flicked his cigarette butt to the ground and stomped it out with his foot.

She wouldn’t necessarily say that her story was interesting since she always viewed her predicament as depressing. But she was glad that she was able to finally get a team to spend time with and practice with, who knew maybe they would end up in the next chunin exams! “It was nice meeting you and Banjo today” She said before standing up and brushing the dirt off her top. “I have to go back now cause I promised my parents I would help them with some chores after their meeting with some guy about something their developing. We should do something together again! Maybe a mission? That would be cool right? Anyways see you later Roark” She said with a smile before bowing to the man and patting Banjo on the head. She could feel that this would be the beginning of the life she always wanted to live and for the first time in her life she was super excited. Waving to the guys leave the training area and head home.

Aye, and you Miss Vicktoria. Roark said in reply to her departure proceedings. Rather than a formal bow, he'd touch the brim of his hat and nod to her. This was more a sign of respect to Roark than any bow, whether Vicktoria knew it or not. It was nice to put a name to a face, and I'm thankful they partnered me with someone competent. I'll have few worries if you're the one watching my back. Roark said with the faintest of smiles as Vicktoria went to pat Banjo on the head. Er, I wouldn't- Roark began, but it was too late, contact had been made with the top of Banjo's head and Roark cringed, waiting for the beast to lash out. However, to his surprise, Banjo merely regarded Vicktoria with a cold stare. Huh, guess you don't mind her as much as I thought you would. You're usually a real bear around strangers. Roark said, to which Banjo simply huffed out his nose and looked away. Alrighty then, come on, let's go scrounge up some grub. You've earned it. Roark said, turning back into his shotgun form. Banjo scooped him out of the air and holstered him on his back, making his way slowly out of the arena on all fours.
