Morrigan's Self Improvement Empty

Learning:

All it would take is one quick little bounce, that was all and she should be able to pull the shadows to her. Peace of cake. She’s done it a million times before. Ok maybe not literally at this point but… at the very least Morrigan was aware she’d done it maybe two hundred times. Maybe another hundred more. Five hundred at absolute Max. So doing it twice in a row. That should be easy! … Right? Well for all Morrigan tried, she just couldn’t pull enough stability. She would leap up, and the shadows would catch her feet. Like it had done three hundred and six times. Huh. So she did have an exact number. But as she leapt to the side, pulling those shadows with her, they reformed and just… collapsed in. And Morrigan fell to the floor again. Thankfully all those times meant she landed gracefully. Too many scraped knees when she first created this technique. It just… didn’t dawn on her yet how to make the technique work. Not to pull the same shadows to her, but to just… go fresh. A simple solution to a simple problem. But sometimes, Morrigan just happened to not see the little things that could build up a much bigger picture. With all the time she had collected enough shadow materia within her own, so by the time she realised, it came to her like she had been doing it all along. Albeit with a feeling of strain for the second. Just as her mother had told her, techniques were just like muscles. You needed to train them, make them your own, and with time it would become that much more comfortable and easier. She had a new limit of two platforms, but with work, she knew she could stretch that further.

Learning:

This whole day was already just so boring for the young Morrigan. The last day of her academy career and she knew she should be a genin already. She had the ability, and now she was finally able to show what she was capable of. Those damn prodigies in the next class up, the so called ‘power class’ currently preparing for their own exams. They thought they were so damn good. And Morrigan knew she was going to catch up, and show them up. With her new dress on she left with her mother, heading down to the Mahou show area. There was a few of her classmates running around her, all excited to be so… plain. How dull. Morrigan twirled her fingers, slowly twisting her Amatsu in her fingers. She didn’t have the ability to morph it’s shape just yet. She was working on it though, it just took time. Time that she very clearly was using where her classmates just wouldn’t. In the past 2 days she had continued to work on developing her Marks, to develop the ability to harness beyond the normal capabilities, beyond the Shadow Release her mother raised her on using. She felt the pull to the depths, but thus far she hadn’t quite gotten it unlocked. Soon. Soon it would though.

The academy was deeply abuzz with the almost infectious excitement. Almost. If not for just how tedious this was for Morrigan, she might have felt it too. But no. Instead they began watching some terrible ‘performance’ of the prior classes. ‘Something to inspire’? The Mikaboshi spat at that. Why would she need to be inspired by brats who had everything handed to them on a silver platter. They were just given the positions because they had influential families. They were just as skilled as… well they were just as skilled as Morrigan and maybe two or three others in the class. But the majority of the class… well maybe seeing the real strength of the shinobi in the Republic of Five might deter some of them, see the power within her, and forfeit from any fights.

Unfortunately she did not get that wish. Instead she was placed in a first round fight to test her skills. With her Amatsu nestled within her dress pocket, she stood straight up, arms out either side and palms flat. She had been preparing something new just for this very occasion. If she didn’t have access to the Dark element her clan could excel in, she would just have to go harder. With a sweep of her arms, she closed them together, and the two fighters would graciously greet each other. And the fight would begin.

For Morrigan this meant shifting her position ready to counter. Having never really befriended anybody within her class she didn't know what they could do, and this one in particular didn't actually give away much of what they were capable of. A young man, maybe a year or two even older than Morrigan with pearl white hair cropped at the sides and fluffed up on top, drawing a thin and old looking hilted sword. Clearly a family heirloom, and clearly having been reforged a great number of times over its lifespan. Honestly that alone was enough to earn a commendation in the young Mikaboshi's eyes. They at least had some level of… and then any sort of mental praise was completely lost. They raised the sword, and began to run. Screaming. The whole time that they were approaching. It wasn’t even a challenge. Her shoulders slumped, and all she needed to do was step to the side. The screaming boy was still screaming as the blade swept passed and in to the dirt where it lodged. This boy was a graduate?! This wouldn’t be at all a challenge. With both hands she slammed her palms against his side, exerting her chakra flow and disrupting his. He let go of his sword, staggering to the side until he tumbled. This boy. Was a graduate. He was going to be a genin. Kami protect her, Morrigan could only pray she wouldn’t be put in a cell with this utter failure. This here was exactly where the so called prodigies were thought to be so far ahead!

The boy got back up reasonably fast at least, but slow enough still that if Morrigan really wanted she could have had his head off. And with his own sword probably. Instead she dragged it from the dirt and tossed it back in front of him at his feet. “Rearming me? You’ll see what a mistake that was.” Morrigan wanted to vomit. He was trying to be threatening.

“... Sorry but so far you’ve telegraphed your attack miles in advance, and might I add it wasn’t even the best attack either I had maybe fifty options. And those are just the options for knocking you out before you even got close. Instead I just… took a step to the side.” Her hands found their slots on her hips, just over the corset before the skirt flared out. This was the pose she had taken so often with this class. One of just ‘I’m better than you. And you all know it’. She hoped it might instill a last minute lesson in to the young swordsman but… no. He just repeated the maneuver. Screaming and all. He didn’t go for just one attack this time though to his own benefit. But his attacks weren’t exactly fast enough. Morrigan was able to side step and back step around every swing of the sword. What she missed however was how each time he was getting that little bit closer and closer. That was until a swipe caught the edges of her hair as one swing came faster.

With another shove, she pushed her young opponent back, free hand coming up to tug at the frayed end of hair that had been cut. Needing to remind herself to actually get that dye in tonight. Ginger just did not suit her aesthetic. But now she was pissed. "Momentum Mori," Morrigan looked up towards the boy speaking again. "The name of the sword, it's Momentum Mori. It quite literally cuts through the air as it swings, getting sharper each time it misses it's mark and cutting the air. That means each time you dodge, I get faster." He certainly wasn't wrong as he lunged for another barrage. Now she was aware, Morrigan paid attention and saw her was right, he was getting faster. Or more accurately, his sword was. And with little bursts of wind. Which meant she knew the element that his sword possessed. Not bad actually.

But he damaged her hair.

Time to get serious.

All this time she was dodging it gave her plenty of experience in just how he fought. This meant she could end this fight at any time. It wouldn't even take much. After a dodge backwards she kicked off the ground, forming a little black Shadow platform beneath her and got herself up and over him. Before she even landed her eyes were fixed on her mark, knowing just where to strike. With simple jabs in to the back of his shoulders, she attacked his chakra path ways with extreme accuracy, and he dropped his sword again. Not one to let him get up again this time, she delivered another series along his back in just as quick succession. It wasn't much, but it showed her acrobatic skills, along with her strength as the boy tumbled over once more. Only this time he stayed there.

Morrigan turned back to the class sensei who gave her the thumbs up. He announced the win to go to Morrigan whilst queuing a medical specialist to take care of the boy, and called in the next round. The boy was fine, just winded and feeling the pull of having lost chakra with the hit.

She didn't care about the others. Really didn't. So she went to just get herself a snack before her next and final fight.

Morrigan was sat alone on a bench in the Academy grounds garden, happy to have quiet time to herself whilst just narrowly being able to hear the fights going on on the other side of the school. She recognised two particular individuals from the sounds of the fight. The first was a young girl from the Bakuhatsu, gifted in taijutsu and wielding literally explosive knuckles. Not hard to recognise the unique sounds of those small explosions. However this girl was maybe one of the only people she respected in the whole class. She too was strong, quite so physically too, but not gifted so much with ninjutsu.

The other was a Faunus girl, a type of arachnid if she wasn’t mistaken. Big fan of poisons and stealth. A girl who fought with her brain, not her strength. And that alone was a big mark towards her strength in Morrigan’s eyes. If she were honest, fighting either girl would make for an interesting time. Albeit she knew which she would favour fighting. The Bakuhatsu, Gama, would bring a nice challenge, and they could have a straight up fight.

“Miss Morrigan Triss. That’s Miss Morrigan Triss. Please report back to the Academy training grounds.”

She rolled her eyes as the intercom summoned her back. She supposed the break was more than long enough. Draining the last of her juice down, she tossed the remains in the trash and strolled back on over. As she did she witnessed the end of the healers. Volunteers offering up their own bodies for this part of the exam. Healing cuts. Establishing illness. Poisons. Simple things. Ok, maybe Morrigan could stomach those students. The good ones at least. Theirs was an… interesting job.

It’s funny, Morrigan thought to herself as she took her place on her side of the now vacant arena, she hadn’t really thought anything of the rest of her class. They always seemed so plain, weak, like they were happy just to coast along. But now… now she was at the very end of her Academy Student career, she was finally starting to see the worth in them. Some of them at least. She met her gaze to reckless sword boy. Ok some of them still didn’t really deserve much.

But it was nice to see who her opponent was. Someone she could really stretch her wings with. “..nd this corner we will have the Bakuhatsu Guerilla, Gama. Good luck to both of our competitors. And show us what you’re made of.”

As soon as the sensei’s arm dropped, Gama dropped in to a ready stance. Her legs were split, she was crouched down with solid footing, and she had one arm extended, the other curved up to protect her. It didn’t even take chakra sensory to see the swirling vortex of chakra that coursed around the girls’ fists. Gama was ready. But so was Morrigan. Or so she thought.

Gama revealed to Morrigan the source of her strength. She had witnessed the Bakuhatsu training her taijutsu skills a lot, but she hadn’t ever seen the girl activating the Gates line of techniques. This alone was enough that Morrigan was taken completely by surprise, taking a blow directly to the gut. She immediately just crumpled up, bending in on herself, before feeling that rush of chakra. And suddenly she was thrown back, skidding and rolling several feet across the floor. There was silence as she lay there a second breathing heavily. Holding her Amatsu tight, the external chakra source creature morphed in to a long pole to help her get up quickly, and bent in to the shape of a bow. This was going to be an interesting fight for sure. There was still silence as the class didn’t know what to make of it. Apparently Morrigan was being treated to something completely new that nobody else was aware Gama was capable of.

Morrigan ran over all the details in her head quickly whilst knocking an arrow. Gama was a powerful physical user, one who had access to the Gates that just knocked those levels off the charts. Then there was her explosive right hook. Literally. That was what she needed to watch out for most.

She supposed this would be the perfect chance to break out her own style. Surely fighting a physical user up close was exactly the sort of thing that would earn her points. Or… it wouldn't. It would be the opposite. The more she thought about it the more that would go against her.

Gama began to move, that same overwhelming, to some of the Academy Students maybe, burst of speed and raw power. But with the distance set up now, Morrigan was ready to use that knuckle’s power against it. The distance allowed Morrigan to ready an arrow, firing it as the blunted tip rocketed through the air and collided hard with Gama’s shoulder, causing the girl to slow and stumble ever so slightly. But she still didn’t stop. Gama just kept coming and delivered another hit to Morrigan. The Mikaboshi got a decent hit, right on the mark, but Gama simply was not deterred any. She just had the drive to keep pushing through and Morrigan was paying the price. She barely had any time to brace and she was sent flying once again. Goodness knows she would seriously need a new combat dress after this. Her corset completely fell off as she climbed back to her feet.

Range wasn’t working, and she couldn’t match with raw power either. And as Gama took her first step forwards, Morrigan knew she would not last longer. Heck, if she took another hit she could well be down for the count. Setting her Amatsu back away freeing up her hands, she took a deep breath and waited. She needed to time this just right. To catch Gama unawares, but… there would be only the tiniest of windows. She had to get it right. Four. Focus, she needed to focus. Three. Morrigan relaxed her hands in to loose fists. Two. Her eyes fixed on her opponent’s. One. Now! Her forward facing hand opened, and a chakra burst was sent out from her. Gama’s eyes widened, and Morrigan knew she had her. Gama was frozen in place, in the centre of a trigram, staring down Morrigan as her fists balled up again. She didn’t have the strength, but she had the speed. And something about the technique, the whole line in fact, had a way of pulling the body beyond its current limits in order to complete the technique. To the outside world, all they would see would be Morrigan narrowly dodging, stepping under Gama’s swung fist, and following up. She punched directly at Gama’s exposed chest as the girl was frozen in place, hitting multiple times over as a darkened mist left the sites of the strikes. With four strikes, Gama stumbled back out of breath and clutching her chest. She no longer had her Gates active. Her head stayed down for a few seconds, even after the match was called in Morrigan’s favour.

And then Morrigan did the one thing she had never done before for anyone in the class. She stepped forwards and offered her hand to Gama. The girl was just as surprised it seemed, but smile and took her hand to be helped up on to her feet. “... You totally owe me a new corset by the way.”

Gama, whilst still out of breath, just burst in to laughter at that notion. “Really? I smack you twice in the gut. You got exploded. And you never talk to any of us. But you think I’ll owe you a corset.”

“Hey, c’mon, nobody else here could’ve taken more than one, maybe two, punches. That corset kept me up.”

“I’ll… I’ll take your word for it.” Gama stepped back, giving a little friendly wave, and wandered back to her little friend group.

It made sense though. Morrigan wasn’t really part of the group. Wasn’t exactly part of the class. But that’s fine. It’s… whatever. She picked up what remained of her corset, checking it over and seeing if she could salvage it. It looked like Gama only broke the clasps on the front. Much cheaper to replace than the leather the rest was made of. Yeah, easily fixable.

“Hey… Morrigan?” The girl turned towards Gama. “... Meet me in the town tomorrow? I’ll see if we can’t find a new outfit for you. My treat.” She didn’t wait for an answer. And Morrigan was too stunned to answer that. Instead she just went back to the little Academy Garden. It was a little louder there now. But it was still quite comfortable. On the plus side, the setting sun looked quite beautiful. Especially to her newly Genin eyes. This was definitely not going to be an easy right from here on out, but Morrigan was ready. She held up her hand and focused. The shadow swirled and grew pitch black. She nearly had it.
